The Modern Commerce Architecture

Composable is a means, not a virtue. What matters is which parts you want to be able to change.

A good commerce architecture is a set of bets about change. You decouple the things you expect to move — proposition, front end, promotion, payment, market coverage — and you keep stable the things that should not move weekly.

Composable done badly is a distributed monolith with more vendors. Every boundary you add is an integration you own forever, so each one should buy real optionality or commercial speed.

The test is simple: how long does it take to launch a new market, a new proposition, or a new payment method? If the answer is quarters, the architecture is a commercial constraint, whatever the diagram says.
